Our Story
We fell in love three times…first with each other, then with the idea of being artists together, and ultimately with a small Victorian in Brooklyn that spoke to us…
Though we had met as science students in college, we both yearned for more creative paths. Eddie loved photography, and I wanted a bigger canvas for my life than going to medical school. Practical concerns, however, took the helm…Eddie went into business, and I freelanced as a designer, illustrator and calligrapher while raising three children.
The small Victorian farmhouse we had found, romantically became the outlet for our artistic ambitions as well as a fun project to delve into as a team. We re-created period woodwork, learned to plaster and pour concrete, laid brick paths and stenciled walls. Our children, all creative, grew up amongst piles of lumber, books on William Morris, and pots of homemade glazes. Our daughter, Alexa, steeped in this fertile environment, grew to become a contemporary watercolorist, featured in art collections across the country.
Years turned to decades, and when our last child left for college, we realized the time had come to dust off the dream. By now, the Cape was our home and designing silver jewelry became our new focus, and we worked for several years to develop our concept.
Our name, LEXACO, is a fusion of our family initials… the X in LEXACO is a symbol for where our creative roads intersect… our collective “eye,” that is…our obsessions and fascinations, whose aesthetic roots grew out of that little antique farmhouse in Brooklyn.
We are fascinated by color & pattern, by the patina acquired by the passage of time on natural materials, and the hidden geometry of nature…by the intrinsic human urge to make something with his or her hands. The touch and feel of timelessness…the kind of quality that’s appreciated for generations… We think handmade objects are the true essentials, since art married to purpose helps make everyday life meaningful.
So, here we are at last, in Harwich Port, with sea breezes blowing through our open doors, flooded with sunlight, and we spend our days designing and curating beautiful, useful objects crafted from wood, clay, cotton and silver. We are finally artists, together.
